You should know who you are, and know that is enough.

Today is just another day, tomorrow is something completely unexpected altogether.

Ritual means nothing if you do not know the longing that precedes it.- Gita Mehta

From space, astronauts can see people making love as a tiny speck of light…this is love, isn’t it? When you notice someone’s absence and hate that absence more than anything? More, even, than you love his presence?- Jonathan Safran Foer

For one human being to love another: that is perhaps the most difficult of all our tasks, the ultimate, the last test and proof, the work for which all other work is but preparation.
- Ranier Maria Rilke

I don’t try to remember what happens in a book. all I ask of a book is for it to inspire me with energy and courage, to tell me that there’s more to life than I can ever know and to remind me of the urgency to act. – Leolo

A book is an intimate object whether you are conscious of it when you are writing it or not. A book is something that is seen with the eyes on a shelf, pulled off the shelf with the hand, taken home. It’s a very fine balance because the two things that make books books, that make them the art form I most love are how much they give and how much they withhold. Like, books are generous things, they give enough to really stimulate your imagination. But they also have to withhold enough for it to be your imagination and not the authors. Really good books are books that have two authors, the reader and the writer. – Jonathan Safran Foer

A valuable lesson I’ve learned is to never left anyone intimidate me. Every student, celebrity, ceo & math teacher in the world has experienced love, loneliness, fear and embarassment at some point. To understand this is to level an often very lopsided playing field.

Take more risks. Be more open. Be confident. – Dayanita

There are two kinds of moral law, two kinds of conscience, one in man and a completely different one in woman. They do not understand each other; but in matters of practical living the woman is judged by man’s law, as if she were not a woman but a man. – Henrik Ibsen

You know what’s wrong with you, Miss Whoever-you-are? You’re chicken, you’ve got no guts. You’re afraid to stick out your chin and say, “Okay, life’s a fact, people do fall in love, people do belong to each other, because that’s the only chance anybody’s got for real happiness.” You call yourself a free spirit, a “wild thing,” and you’re terrified somebody’s gonna stick you in a cage. Well baby, you’re already in that cage. You built it yourself. And it’s not bounded in the west by Tulip, Texas, or in the east by Somali-land. It’s wherever you go. Because no matter where you run, you just end up running into yourself. – Breakfast at Tiffany’s

I honor that place in you where the whole Universe resides. And when I am in that place in me and you are in that place in you, there is only one of us.

When you are lonely, writing can keep you company. It is also a form of self-compensation, a way of making up for things- asopposed to making things up- that did not quite happen. – Geoff Dyer

le mot juste – the right word

If you only read the great writers, you’ll be in trouble. Read junk! It’s enormously encouraging to tell yourself ‘I can do better than that.’- Edward Albee
